Bears by the Somass River
If you would love to see a black bear in the wild in a very safe location, this is about the best and most convenient place to do it on Vancouver Island. Across the river is a wild natural area that is frequented by bears when the salmon are running. The Sockeye salmon are in the river in late June and July, and the Chinook and Coho salmon are there in September & October. Show up on a low tide and wait in your vehicle. There is plenty of parking if you turn left at the Welcome Figures.
These carvings were erected by the Hupacasath First Nation, one of the two aboriginal tribes in Port Alberni. People often think of them as totem poles. But they serve another function, to welcome visitors to the city. They stand by the Somass River at the foot of Johnston Road, also known as Highway 4, the route to Pacific Rim National Park.
