Some Big Ones

Some Big Ones

Yesterday, the day after Valentine’s, Brad and I ditched our better-halves and took off to find some big trees. There are some huge ones along the banks of the Stamp River. Groves of them! As big as the ones in Cathedral Grove only it’s just you with them.

Anyway, we were were looking for record-sized trees. I had a copy of the Douglas fir section Great Tree Register of British Columbia, a Suunto, a 60m measuring tape and a notebook. Brad had a flashlight and binoculars.  The flashlight helps to see the other end of the tape in the dense coastal foliage.

It was a very relaxed afternoon in the winter sun. We measured about three circumferences. All were over 5 meters (16 ft) around. The biggest one we measured was 72.5 m (238 ft). That’s tall enough to make it into the top 7 tallest Douglas fir in the registry. But it has a point system that includes measurements like diameter at breast height, and crown spread. This tree had a small crown spread and, despite being 7.71m (22ft) around, was a little on the skinny side compared to the others in the registry.

The picture here is of a grove called the Seven Dwarves. The biggest one we measured was very close to these guys. I’ll be posting more about the trip over the next few days.
